A furniture donation pickup in Toronto is the first step when a sofa, dresser, or table is still something another household can use. The household that receives it gets a piece it needs, the item stays out of a landfill, and the pickup can cost less than a haul. It only works if that charity takes the item, can come before your deadline, and you can meet their access rules.
This page is that decision: Furniture Bank, Habitat for Humanity GTA ReStores, and a neighbour giveaway, then a haul when none of those can take the piece in time. City curbside rules for one couch are at junkofurs.com/blog/how-to-get-rid-of-a-couch-toronto. What happens to a load after pickup is at junkofurs.com/blog/what-happens-to-junk-after-pickup. Vaughan condo and house access is at junkofurs.com/blog/vaughan-furniture-disposal. If donation falls through, the haul service is at junkofurs.com/services/furniture-removal.
Furniture Bank: what they take and how pickup works
Furniture Bank is a registered charity and social enterprise in Toronto. Its site says it serves people transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing abuse, or rebuilding after a crisis, and that it works with community agency partners to support women and children leaving shelters, refugees, and people who were formerly homeless. That description is at furniturebank.org/what-is-furniture-bank.
It accepts sofas, chairs, tables, dressers, desks, beds, and wooden bed frames, plus gently used mattresses and box springs only when they are stain-free. It rejects bed bugs, other pests, mold, bodily fluids, deep stains, rips, large appliances, clothing, cabinetry, and wall-to-wall carpet. Only items free of stains, tears, odours, and major damage are re-homed. Drop-off is good condition only. If a pickup includes something that cannot be re-homed, they say they recycle or divert it. That is their process, not ours. The lists are at furniturebank.org/what-we-accept and furniturebank.org/what-do-you-accept.
You book on their form and upload photos. They email a quote, then confirm a date after you approve it. The crew comes inside, a typical window is 1 to 2 days, and a pickup fee applies. Read the current fee on their site. Warehouse drop-off for smaller loads is Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Coverage on their page runs from Hamilton to Whitby and north to Newmarket. The steps are at furniturebank.org/how-it-works/for-donors/how-pickup-works and the form is at furniturebank.org/donate/donate-furniture/request-a-pickup.
Habitat for Humanity GTA ReStores
Habitat for Humanity GTA runs Habitat ReStore, a chain of non-profit home improvement stores. The donation FAQ says there are 10 locations across the GTA, that donated items are sold in those stores, and that the proceeds support construction of Habitat homes. The FAQ is at habitatrestore.ca/pages/donation-pickup-faqs.
The donate page lists new and gently used furniture, plus appliances and other household and building items. A store can still say no because of age, condition, or space. Drop-off is during store hours. The page is habitatrestore.ca/pages/donate.
That page passes on items that are damaged, water damaged, moldy, broken, incomplete, missing parts, or excessively stained or dirty. Mattresses, box springs, and sofa beds are on the pass list, unlike Furniture Bank's stain-free mattress rule. Photos are required, and drivers can refuse a piece that is not saleable when they arrive.
Donation pickup is available, and a fee can apply. The current amount is on the donate page. For an in-home pickup, items have to be on the main floor before the crew arrives, and drivers do not take pieces apart or remove doors. In a condo, you stage approved items at the loading bay. If the building only has a lobby, say so on the form. They recommend booking at least 10 days ahead, and they do not guarantee a specific day.
Give it to a neighbour, or skip the wrong drop-off
If the piece is clean and you can wait, the Buy Nothing Project is a neighbour giveaway, not a charity truck. Its help centre says you can post furniture to give away, and a neighbour coordinates the handoff. Start at buynothingproject.org.
A Salvation Army Thrift Store is not a furniture route. Its donations page says Donor Welcome Centres do not accept furniture, beds, mattresses, or box springs, and that they do not offer pickup. The page is thriftstore.ca/donations-of-clothing-and-household-goods.
What gets refused, and how to prepare the piece
Check the current list and send photos. The usual no is a piece with deep stains, rips, water damage, odour (including pet or smoke), pests, or major damage, such as particle board that came apart. Heavily worn upholstery fails that test. Do not donate anything with bed bugs. Mattresses are stain-free only at Furniture Bank. Habitat passes on mattresses, box springs, and sofa beds.
Photograph the piece in good light, from more than one side, with a doorway or a tape measure in the frame. Measure the tightest doorway. Clean it, empty the drawers, and tape loose hardware to the frame in a bag. Book early. Habitat asks for at least 10 days, and Furniture Bank's typical 1 to 2 day window can still slip if the calendar is full. If you cannot meet their access rule before your deadline, book a haul.
When the charity says no: a haul, then a checklist
A refusal, or a pickup date after your move-out or condo elevator booking, is when a haul makes sense. Junk 'Of' Urs picks up household furniture. The service page is junkofurs.com/services/furniture-removal. When it makes sense, usable furniture is directed toward donation or reuse channels, and metals and recyclables are separated where facilities allow. Not everything can be donated. We do not promise that a specific sofa, dresser, or mattress will be donated, and we do not pick up as a partner of Furniture Bank, Habitat ReStore, or any other charity.
Residential prices below are all-in, HST included. The minimum job is $99. An armchair is $99. A loveseat is $119. A standard 3-seat sofa is $149. A dresser, desk, or dining table is $99 to $129. An eighth of a load is $179. A quarter load is $299. Stairs for a single item add $30 per flight. The final flat rate is confirmed from photos. Other household rates are at junkofurs.com/pricing. A mattress neither charity will take is at junkofurs.com/services/mattress-removal.
Five questions close the decision. Is it in good shape, with no deep stains, rips, odour, pests, or major damage? Does that charity's current list include the item? Can you wait for their pickup date? Can you get it to the door, the main floor, or the loading bay they require? What is your deadline? If the answers line up, book the charity and keep the confirmation. If they do not, send a few photos for a flat-rate quote at https://junkofurs.com/quote. Great projects start with a clean slate.
