How to Get Rid of a Couch in Toronto: City Pickup, Donation, or Haul-Away

How to get rid of a couch in Toronto: City oversized pickup for houses, donation if the couch is still usable, or a paid haul when timing, access, or condition get in the way.

Getting rid of a couch in Toronto usually comes down to three paths. A house on City curbside collection can set the couch out as an oversized item on garbage day. A clean couch that is still usable can go to a charity, if that charity confirms it will take the piece. A paid haul-away fits when the next garbage day is too far off, the building will not allow a curb set-out, or the couch should not sit outside.

This is the how-to: City rules for houses, what to ask in a condo, when donation is realistic, and what a residential haul costs on our rate card. The pickup service itself is at junkofurs.com/services/couch-removal, with the Toronto page at junkofurs.com/junk-removal/toronto/couch-removal. Junk 'Of' Urs hauls household furniture across Toronto and the GTA.

Does the City of Toronto pick up couches from houses?

Yes, for houses on City curbside collection. On the City's oversized and metal items page, furniture is an oversized item. Crews collect it beside your garbage bin on your garbage collection day. You do not book an appointment for that pickup.

A garbage tag is a separate rule. Extra garbage that does not fit in the bin with the lid closed has to be bagged, tagged, and set beside the bin. The City's excess garbage page treats oversized furniture as a different stream. A couch goes out loose, next to the bin, with no tag on it.

Leave about 0.5 metres between the couch and the bin, and the same gap between the couch and anything else at the curb. The set-out page uses that space so the truck's automated arms can lift the bin. Daytime collection: at the curb before 7 a.m. on collection day, and no earlier than 8 p.m. the night before. Night collection: after 6 p.m. and before 9 p.m. on the collection day. The day itself depends on the address, so check the schedule for your house.

Tie down a sofa bed frame so it does not spring open. A regular couch does not have to be dismantled for City pickup. The excess garbage page says bulky items such as couches, mattresses, and other furniture can go out whole.

If the couch has bed bugs, wrap it completely in plastic and set it out on your scheduled collection day. The City also says to consider taking the item apart, damaging it, or posting a warning sign so someone does not carry it home.

The City bills each house an annual fee for oversized-item collection, whether you use the pickup that year or not. That fee is what pays for curbside furniture collection. It is separate from the garbage tag you buy for extra bags. Look up the current figure on the City's garbage bin fees page if you need the dollar amount.

In a snowstorm, hold oversized items until the next collection date. The City's set-out page says to keep oversized items back in a storm, and not to place items on or behind snowbanks. The official oversized page is toronto.ca/services-payments/recycling-organics-garbage/houses/oversized-metal-items.

Condos and apartments follow the building

House curbside rules do not always apply the same way in a condo or apartment. The City's Waste Wizard tells apartment, condo, and co-op residents to ask the property manager or superintendent where bulky items go in that building.

Use the designated bulky area, and follow the hours and booking rules the building gives you. That is the set-out spot the building assigns. Many buildings also want the service elevator booked before anything large moves. If the building will not take the couch, or the next allowed set-out is too far away, a haul from the unit is the practical path.

Donation only if the couch is still usable

A clean couch you would still offer a friend can be a donation. In Toronto, Furniture Bank and Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations are the usual places people try. Both move usable household goods onward. A stained, torn, or broken couch is a poor match for that.

Furniture Bank says pieces it will re-home should be free of stains, tears, odours, major damage, and pests, and it tells donors to check the current accepted list. ReStore shops need items they can sell, so heavily stained or broken upholstery is usually refused there too. Bed-bug furniture should not be donated. Before you hold the couch, confirm the current accepted list and any pickup fee on the charity's own site.

Donation is the path that keeps a usable couch in use. City pickup and a paid haul are disposal. If the charity says no, you are back to garbage day or a hauler. We do not book the charity pickup, and we do not promise a charity will accept the piece.

When a haul-away is the better fit

City pickup works on your garbage day, at a house, when you can get the couch to the curb yourself. A hauler is the better fit when that combination is missing.

You need it gone the same week, and garbage day is still several days away. The couch would sit through rain, or the City has told you to hold oversized items through a snowstorm. You are in a condo and the elevator, the dock, or the bulky room is the constraint. Stairs, a tight landing, or a sectional that has to come apart to fit a door are more than a curb drop. You are clearing more than the couch, so one visit replaces several trips downstairs.

On Friday, September 25, 2026, we hauled a two-piece sectional, about 116 inches, plus two closet doors, from a curbside pickup in East York, in the Broadview North area. It was our first job in that neighbourhood. The sectional was already at the curb, which is the simple version of this work. The same piece on an upper floor, or one that will not fit a doorway without coming apart, is the case for booking a crew. East York details are at junkofurs.com/junk-removal/east-york/couch-removal.

What a residential couch haul costs

These residential rates are all-in, HST included, for easy access. Easy access means the curb, a garage, the ground floor, or an elevator. The minimum job on the card is $99 all-in. The written quote is the price before we load.

An armchair or a recliner is $99. A power recliner is $119. A loveseat is $119. A standard 3-seat sofa is $149. A sofa bed or sleeper is $199. An L-sectional of 2 to 3 pieces is $229. A large sectional, 4 or more pieces or a power sectional, is $279 to $329. Two couches are $269, plus break-down if they will not fit through the door.

Stairs, a basement carry, and taking a sectional apart sit outside those easy-access prices. They are confirmed on the quote from photos of the couch and of the path to the truck.

Frequently asked questions

Does the City of Toronto pick up couches?
Yes for houses on City curbside collection. Set the couch beside the garbage bin on your garbage day, with about 0.5 metres of space around it. You do not book an appointment, and you do not put a garbage tag on the couch. Tags are for extra bagged garbage. Tie a sofa bed frame so it does not spring open. Confirm the collection day on your City schedule.
How do I throw out a couch from a Toronto condo or apartment?
Ask the property manager or superintendent where the designated bulky area is. House curbside rules do not always apply in a condo or apartment. Follow the building's elevator and dock rules. If the building will not take the couch, a haul from the unit is the usual next step.
Do I have to wrap a couch that has bed bugs?
Yes. The City says to wrap bed-bug furniture completely in plastic and set it out on your scheduled collection day. Consider damaging it or posting a warning so it is not reused. Do not donate an infested couch.
How much does a standard 3-seat sofa cost to haul away?
A standard 3-seat sofa is $149 all-in, HST included, with easy access: curb, garage, ground floor, or elevator. A loveseat is $119. A sofa bed or sleeper is $199. The minimum job on the card is $99 all-in. The written quote is the price before we load.
Should I donate a couch or send it for disposal?
Donate when the couch is clean and usable and the charity confirms it will take the piece. Stained, broken, or infested couches are usually refused. City pickup and a paid haul are disposal. Check Furniture Bank or a Habitat for Humanity ReStore for the current rules, including any pickup fee, before you count on a donation.
