Garage Cleanout Checklist for Markham Homeowners

Set aside an afternoon and work one wall of the bay until it is done. Unionville and Markham Village bays are older and often a single width. Cornell, Box Grove, Berczy Village, and Cathedraltown are newer, and on a townhome the bay is often the only storage the house has. Angus Glen and Milliken add a second bay that turned into a spare room. The steps follow that housing.

Carry paint, fuel, and propane out before anything else

Start with a box for leftover paint, a propane cylinder, a gas can, and the oil from the mower or the snowblower. Those stay out of the haul row. Markham residents can take them to the depot at 430 Rodick Road, just south of Miller Avenue. The City of Markham page for that depot says there is no charge for Markham residents, and it lists the current days.

York Region asks for labelled sealed containers, says not to mix products, and does not return the containers. Take the regulator off a propane cylinder. The Region's stated resident limit is 60 litres per vehicle per day, and up to three propane cylinders. Stand tires beside the bay instead of burying them in the haul row. Look up the current York Region depot rule for tires before you treat them as junk. A mower or snowblower with the fluids drained can stay with the household things.

Finish one wall, and give the keepers a real home

Pick a wall and finish it. Anything you are keeping needs a shelf in the house or a labelled corner that will still be there after the crew leaves. In a Cornell, Box Grove, or Cathedraltown townhome, that bay is often the only place those bins fit. If the keepers have nowhere to go, they end up back in front of the overhead door.

A solid bike, usable tools, and furniture someone else will take can be sold or given away first. Check that the organization still accepts the item in Markham. Do not hold a stained bed or a broken treadmill for a donation that will refuse it.

The haul row can stay loose. Matching bags are optional. Collapse a freestanding shelf if a screwdriver takes it apart. Cabinets built into the wall stay. We carry what is already loose. We do not dismantle the building.

Narrow bays in Unionville and Markham Village

Main Street Unionville and the older blocks of Markham Village were not built around a double-width bay. The opening is narrow, the side yard is tight, and the overhead door may not clear a heap that has crept forward. Pull a path to the door before you take pictures, or the back wall never shows up.

These houses often have a basement stair off the bay or just inside the side door. If part of the clear-out is down there, photograph that stair on its own. A lawn tractor, loose lumber, and clay pots belong in the picture too, not in a note that says 'and some other stuff'.

Townhome lanes in Cornell, Berczy, and Box Grove

A townhome bay on a Cornell or Berczy crescent often opens onto a shared lane, with visitor parking instead of a private apron wide enough for a crew. Walk outside and note which stall can be used, and whether the lane is a dead end. Put that in the same note as the pictures.

Box Grove and Cathedraltown repeat the pattern: hockey net, stroller, winter tires, and the boxes from the move. Decide which of those stay. Winter tires you are keeping should be stacked where the car will sit, not in the haul row.

If the floor is a step down from the lane, say so. That lip changes how a treadmill or a freezer comes out.

Angus Glen and Milliken

Angus Glen detached houses often have a second bay that stopped being a parking spot. If a car still fits, the haul is the stored corner, not the whole floor. Photograph from the door and from the back wall so the empty parking space is obvious.

Milliken, toward Steeles and Kennedy, mixes detached houses with townhomes. A house on a driveway is a straight carry. A townhome court needs the visitor stall named, the same as Cornell. Do not plan those two stops the same way.

Pictures, then the short answer

Take two angles of the whole bay, with the door or a car in the frame for scale. Add one picture of the path from the street, including a shared lane or a visitor stall. Note stairs, a side door, and anything you are keeping.
